The study of questions that have definite answers. Deals with number and other abstract structures using pure logic. Mathematicians ask questions and build tools to answer them.

## Arithmetic

### Addition & Subtraction

Moving up and down the number line.

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10...

Equation - notes something is the same. Ex. 3 = 3. An algebraic equation tries to find an unknown from its relation to another number. Ex. 3 + 4 = x.

Addition - combination of two numbers to become one - a sum. Noted with symbol '+' (plus) between the two numbers being added. Ex. 3 + 4 = 7:

Subtraction - makes one number smaller by another number - a difference. Noted with '-' (minus). Ex. 9 - 2 = 7:

### Multiplication & Division

Multiplication - adding the same number a certain amount of times into a product. Noted with '*' (read as 'times'). Ex. 3*4 = 12:

3 + 3 + 3 + 3
or
4 + 4 + 4

Division - breaks up large number into equal portions (quotient). Noted with '/'. Ex. 10/2 = 5.

## Exponentation

Multiplying the same number a certain amount of times . Noted with "^", or the second number being written above the right side of the first read as 'to the power of'). Ex. 5^3 = 5*5*5 = 125. Can also be noted as:

Exponenting something to the power of 2 is squaring, to the power of 3 is cubing. An equation that contains an unknown which is squared is quadratic ex. 16 = x ^ 2; if it is cubed, it is cubic, further quartic, quintic.
